16,000 years ago, glacial melting removed the ice dam impounding the waters of Montana's 250 mile long Lake Missoula. The resulting flood released 500 cubic miles of water in a westward flowing wall of water more than 1000 ft. high over an area of 2000 square miles. It cut canyons 900 feet deep and carried boulders 30 feet in diameter.
