Whoever coined the phrase “big things come in small packages”, would love the Orion StarMax 90 TableTop Mak-Cass telescope. This ultra-compact Maksutov-Cassegrain gives surprisingly big views for an instrument of its modest size, making it an elegant first telescope or a pleasantly portable grab-and-go second telescope!
The long, 1250mm focal length (f/13.8) gives the StarMax 90 TableTop telescope some serious magnifying power. The included 25mm and 10mm 1.25″ 3-element eyepieces yield powers of 50x and 125x magnification, respectively. The 90mm diameter Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube collects over 25% more light than an 80mm refractor, and up to 225% as much light as a traditional beginner’s 60mm refractor telescope. With the advantage of additional aperture, you’ll be able to enjoy excellent, detailed views of planetary delights such as lunar landscapes, Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons through the Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. As you scan the Milky Way, you’ll also be able to pull in sparkling open and globular star clusters, as well as brighter nebulas.
The optical tube assembly of the Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop Mak-Cass Telescope is attached to a stable table-top swivel base, via a quick-release dovetail mount with adjustable altitude tension. The Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope tube can easily be removed from the table-top base to be mounted on an optional photo tripod. The small swivel base itself can also be mounted on a camera tripod with a 3/8″ screw, in case there isn’t a table near your preferred observing location.
The StarMax 90mm TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain comes with a lot of great accessories so you can make the most out of each evening under the stars:
An included Orion EZ Finder II reflex sight lets you aim the 90mm telescope with ease.
Following a simple alignment procedure that parents can help with, you can use the EZ Finder II sight to accurately aim the StarMax 90mm TableTop Mak-Cass telescope at objects in the sky like the Moon and bright planets. Once aligned with the telescope, just turn on the EZ Finder II and peer through the sight’s small circular viewing window so you see the red dot, and move the telescope until the red dot is on the object you want to see to place it in the telescope’s field of view.
Start stargazing with the 25mm eyepiece for 50-power views.
The included 25mm eyepiece provides a 50-power view in the StarMax 90mm Mak-Cass. The 25mm is a great eyepiece to use first when you stargaze with the telescope each night, since it provides a larger, less magnified window of night sky for you to view. This lower magnification makes it easy to find objects to explore in the night sky.
Increase magnifying power with the 10mm eyepiece.
After you’ve scanned the skies with the 25mm eyepiece in the StarMax 90mm telescope, take a closer look at interesting objects by swapping out the 25mm with 10mm eyepiece to boost magnification from 50x all the way up to 125x. The more powerful view in the 10mm focal length eyepiece reveals details such as craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, and brighter moons of Jupiter.
Use the included 90° star diagonal for comfortable views of the night sky.
A diagonal “bends” the light path of a telescope so you can enjoy the view without having to contort yourself into awkward positions to peer into the eyepiece. The 90° star diagonal that comes with the StarMax 90mm TableTop Telescope yields bright images and provides a comfortable right-angle viewing orientation for nighttime stargazing of the skies above.
Learn all about the night sky with the included Starry Night Special Edition software.
Explore starry skies anytime – even when it’s cloudy! The Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop telescope includes a FREE download insert for a Special Edition of Starry Night astronomy software.
